Physical properties of Emerald Stone

CARATS

Bigger is better, right? Well not necessarily. Carat weight obviously helps determine the price of the emerald, and a 4 carat stone will be more expensive than a 1 carat stone, all other factors being equal. But carat weight plays a much larger role in the pricing of diamonds than it does with emeralds. With the latter, we are primarily interested in the color of the stone, then its clarity and cut, and only finally its carat weight.

Emerald experts agree that it’s better to buy a smaller emerald with excellent color quality than a larger one with poor color quality. And beware that there will be a big price jump once you hit 1 carat since it takes, on average, the removal of five tons of dirt to find a gem-quality emerald over 1 carat. In gemstones, clarity and transparency are closely linkedEmeralds are normally found to have visible flaws. If flaws in the emerald reduces the clarity and transparency of Emerald completely, then gemstone may not get good price in the market.

emerald toneCOLOR

Color is the biggest factor in establishing the value and quality in natural emeralds.  Color is divided into: Hue, Tonal Grade, and Saturation.  Hue refers to the kind of green color the emerald has.  It gives a name to the color. Most of the Colombian emeralds present a “bluish green”. The color of Emerald decides the price of Emerald in the market. However, the cut, clarity and size of the gem are also deciding factors for the price of this gemstone. Emerald that are medium to dark green are considered as emeralds and lighter are called green beryl.

Tonal gradeestablishes the degree of darkness or lightness of the green color in the gem.  Natural emeralds present a wide variety of green tones:

Very Light  /  Light  /  Medium Light  /  Medium  /  Medium Dark  /  Very Dark

Many people consider that a good emerald is dark green.  Most of the literature about these gems will say that a good emerald will have a Tonal grade from Medium to Very Dark. Be careful because this is only one part of the color feature. Color is only one of the factors that make the value in these gems.

CLARITY

Clarity in emeralds speaks about what the gem looks like on the inside and this is what makes an emerald a different gem than any other. Most emeralds present inclusions that are small bits of other minerals, gas, liquid, and crystals that the emeralds take on in the crystallization process. About 99% of all natural emeralds will present inclusions.

Emerald gemstone come in varying sizes. Emerald gemstones comes in different sizes. A large size emerald is rare to find thus the price of the Emerald go up with the increase in the size of gem. Bigger the size more the price. Relationships between per-carat prices and sizes vary with each specific gemstone group.
